Montreuil’s masterpiece is Louis IX’s medieval palace chapel, Sainte-Chapelle, with its twotier structure. It was built to house Christ’s Crown of Thorns. Other surviving churches in Paris are St-Germain-des-Prés, the oldest surviving abbey church in Paris (1050); the tiny, rustic Romanesque St-Julien-lePauvre; and the Flamboyant Gothic St-Séverin, St-Germain l’Auxerrois, and St-Merry.

In 1907, Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) painted the seminal work Les Demoiselles d’Avignon at the Bateau-Lavoir (see p230), where Georges Braque (1882–1963), Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920), and Marc Chagall (1887–1985) also lived.
