These gaps, which reflect the lower political and economic involvement of women in the Chilean public sphere, are of interest in themselves and will be explored further in the study. In total I interviewed thirty-five people - eighteen men and seventeen women. At the time of interview the group was made up of fourteen married pairs where both partners participated; one married pair where the woman only participated; two men and two women (unrelated) whose marriages had broken down in exile and two bachelors.

In the remaining seven cases, however, the woman's job had been less highly regarded than that of her husband. Seven out of the eleven couples had a degree of shared political outlook and in six cases this involved membership of the same political party. In all eleven couples, however, one area of the marriage relationship had remained clearly differentiated. Childcare and domestic work had remained the women's responsibility, although all women had delegated part of the task of running the home to a maid.

In this way I hope it plays some part in giving women a voice. Apart from gender my class position as university researcher also provided analytical insights through the adjustments which I had to make when interviewing middle-class and working-class exiles. When interviewing the intellectuals in the sample I was interacting with my peers. 7 There was a good deal of shared research experience, especially with the social scientists in the sample. Indeed some were more accustomed to assuming the role of researcher than that of interviewee.
