Su Password: # adb -k -w /dev/ksyms /dev/mem physmem 1e05 rootdir/X rootdir: rootdir: fc109408 rootdir/W 0 rootdir: 0xfc109408 = $q # 0x0 How does this procedure crash your system? Solaris keeps track of the address of the root vnode structure in a symbol called rootdir. If this vnode pointer is zero, the next time the system tries to do anything that would require walking down a directory path, it will fall over trying to read location zero looking for the root directory's vnode. Reading memory location zero is an illegal operation which results in a bad trap, data fault.

On Solaris 1 systems, it is very easy to specify a dump device other than the swap device. This is done through the system configuration file, on the config line, which describes where your root file system and swap partition exist. For complete details, refer to the man page on config(8). As an example, here are config lines from two system configuration files. The first, shown here, will result in system crash dumps being stored on the swap device, config vmunix swap on sd1b whereas the second, shown below, specifies a dump device different from the swap device.

The interactive capability of kadb can have major advantages when, for example, you are looking at panics caused by a device driver you are trying to install and debug. The driver is loaded, the device is available, which is not the case when looking at a set of postmortem files, and all of the kernel data is right there. Using kadb, you can set breakpoints and treat the kernel just like a great, big, user program, stepping through its execution, examining and modifying values on-the-fly. Working with adb on system crash dump postmortem files doesn't provide this level of interaction with your patient, the system, since you are really dealing with a computer corpse at that point.
