Direct observations of this first stellar generation represent one of the most interesting challenges of observational cosmology and one of the primary objectives of the JWST. 4 The large-scale structure of the universe It is regarded as a fundamental truth that galaxies are not uniformly distributed around the universe. Rather, they collect together in the densest regions to form groups, galaxy clusters and superclusters. They have elongated or flat structures, which in turn enclose holes – regions of very low galaxy density – giving the distribution of galaxies in the universe a “bubble-like” structure when viewed on a scale of up to a billion light years.

The smallest recognisable structures in the sky were about 7° wide. Copious amounts of information on the structure of the universe at an age of 380,000 years are hidden in the cosmic background radiation at angular scales between around one degree and several arc minutes. New and more powerful experiments will therefore measure these fluctuations with vastly improved angular resolutions and greater sensitivity. 1). A preview of the spectacular results expected was given by the microwave mapping of small regions of the sky with improved angular resolution, by the balloon-based instruments BOOMERanG and MAXIMA in 2000, and by the recently published WMAP map.
